Artist Statement

I feel that our society has been silently hardened; that we have lost our way as human beings.

We tear down old elegant buildings and trusty old barns because they are not “up to code”, we dare not take the extra time nor the extra money to repair them.

We cast aside people that have been used up, seem useless or are not as "put together" as we are.  We cast our eyes down and pretend that they don’t exist.  We have forgotten how to, or are told not to, reach out with our hands and our hearts.

We flatten and lay fields of cement where there were once farmlands, river bottoms and hillsides.  We find that our monetary dreams are more important than any naturally occurring beauty that our creator put here for us to enjoy.

We fill our trashcans with objects because they are now empty.  We don’t even take the time to think if they might have a second or a third use.  Some households are taking out the trash daily and thinking that it’s all okay as soon as the trash truck hauls it away.

I find beauty in all of these people, places and objects and use my art to celebrate their beauty.

I paint and sculpt moments in my life that strike a cord with me: a person with that special kindness in their eyes, perhaps, a survivor, whose hardships have lifted their values from everyday monetary goals, to goals of the spirit.  People who are beautiful on the inside are always beautiful on the outside.  When I look into their eyes, I see their creator’s love shining through.  Who are we to say that they aren’t up to our standards?  Who are we to judge?

A landscape that still echoes with the greatness of its creator: one that has not yet, been “developed”, as if by developing it we are doing a good thing; a tree that stands on its own, crooked and broken from the forces of nature, in some random order amongst other trees and bushes; a flower that bends in the wind and then reaches up to the sun.  Flowers that are now called weeds; I wonder what God thinks of that.

I believe all of this should be celebrated and placed on the pedestal of this thing we call art, as kings, queens and nobility have for centuries
